Buffalo Chip $100,000 Pledge Kickstarts Special Olympics Campaign

Spearfish, SD (January 16, 2016) – The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® and participants in its signature Legends Ride are teaming up in a special effort to help Special Olympics in the Black Hills area create a permanent athlete training facility. Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff has pledged $100,000 to a fundraising campaign effort by Black Hills Works and Special Olympics to renovate an existing facility in order to meet the growing needs of the organization. The 127 Special Olympians who are members of the “Rapid City Flame” team have been training in various borrowed locations over the past few years but are now in need of a facility that will offer the team members a sense of permanence and accomplishment. For the past three years, Legends Ride contributions have been used to purchase a van to transport participants to practices and events; now the need for a facility is a priority.

“I couldn’t think of an organization more deserving of our help than Special Olympics,” said Rod Woodruff, Buffalo Chip President. “When the kids come to events, and we see how happy and proud they are to have the van we purchased, it is abundantly evident we are making a difference in their lives and in the Black Hills community. Now they need a place to train, a place where they can feel at home, and we are ready to step up and help them with that too.”

Black Hills Works, an organization which provides support for Black Hills adults with disabilities, offered to share their gym with the youth, but the building is in need of major updating. The funds pledged by the Buffalo Chip’s Legends Ride will allow BHW clients to use the renovated gym on a daily basis while giving priority scheduling to the Special Olympics teams for training.

“This is a great partnership,” said Special Olympics South Dakota Board Member, Jack Lynass. “We explored the idea of building our own gym, but even if we could have paid for construction, the maintenance and utilities were out of range for our organization. The Black Hills Works gym is in need of renovation, and we need a permanent location where the kids can feel at home. With the help of the Buffalo Chip and Legends Riders, we have a very good start on the fundraising needed to make this facility work for both organizations.”

“Once again we owe a great debt of gratitude to Rod and Carol Woodruff for their extraordinary generosity in supporting our friends and neighbors with special needs,” said Special Olympics South Dakota Chairman of the Board, Dr. Mark Harlow. “Having a dedicated facility to support activities for both sports and social events is in line with Project Unify, a national Special Olympics education and sports based program, and South Dakota is leading the way by making these opportunities available.”

Black Hills Works, located on the west side of Rapid City, currently assists about 580 disabled adults from numerous Black Hills communities and supports the 280 athlete members of the “Storm” adult Special Olympics team.

“The gym is an integral part of our clients’ lives. This partnership and the renovations will greatly benefit both organizations,” said Brad Saathoff, Black Hills Works CEO. “It’s busy all of the time, either with individuals shooting hoops or working out or with scheduled team activities. It’s evident it has gotten a lot of use. It definitely needs a new floor, and without a breezeway, the new floor would be ruined in no time. We also would really like to upgrade the locker rooms and expand the cramped weight and cardio room. There are many times when all of the machines are busy, and there are several people crammed in waiting for their turn.”

One hundred percent of Legends Riders contributions benefit charity. The 2016 Legends Ride will take place on Monday, Aug. 8.

Sturgis, SD (January 6, 2015) – The name Evel Knievel is synonymous with daredevil. He was the undisputed king of stunt showmanship–the man who made motorcycles fly. He enthralled audiences with his nonchalance as he faced death-defying exploits that left him with a record-breaking number of fractured or crushed bones, a permanent limp and the adoration of millions. This August, the spirit of Knievel® will come to life at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip in a spectacular thrill show unlike any organized before. The Evel Knievel Thrill Show will consist of the largest collection of Evel Knievel curiosities ever assembled, including the Skycycle, x-rays of his numerous broken bones, the now famous “Sports Illustrated” leathers and cape, and the Mack truck show-rig he named “Big Red.” The Thrill Show will also include a dangerous attempt at an unsuccessful Evel Knievel world-record jump on the same bike that failed Evel and ultimately lead to his defeat. On Aug. 6, 2015, daredevil Doug Danger will attempt a 22-car jump on Evel Knievel’s vintage 1972 Harley-Davidson XR-750 in the middle of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip amphitheater.

A young Evel Knievel attempts to jump over a series of cars

Knievel attempted a jump over a line of 22 cars on September 1, 1972 in Monroe, Washington. His crew warned that the bike would not attain the speed needed to clear the distance, but because Knievel insisted on doing the jump, they built a safety ramp over the last three cars. Knievel bounce-landed on the safety ramp and left defeated. More than 40 years later, Doug Danger is set to attempt the same jump on Knievel’s own bike and clear the 22nd car. Knievel’s bike has not been altered with the exception of moving a foot peg to accommodate Danger’s height. Another daredevil attempted this jump in 2001, and it ended in a horrific crash.

“This is an incredibly difficult and terrifying jump,” said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff. “We are doing all we can to make sure Doug Danger lands safely, but that bike was not built for a jump like this. We really hope he can make it.”

“This is the one jump Evel couldn’t make; he failed. I’m determined to succeed where he fell short,” Danger said. “I know it’s dangerous, but death has had me by the throat twice in my life, and I spit in its face. When God’s ready, he’ll take me.”

The Evel Knievel Thrill Show curiosities will be located in the CrossRoads area at the Buffalo Chip July 31 – Aug. 8, entrance fee, paid in advance, is only $10. Doug Danger will attempt the record-breaking jump on Knievel’s XR-750 in the Buffalo Chip amphitheater on Thursday, Aug. 6. Campground day passes for Thursday will be available beginning Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 5pm at BuffaloChip.com or by calling the Buffalo Chip box office at 605-347-9000.

Lees Summit, MO. – Coming up in a few short days is the beginning of the 74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, there are obviously several great events in store for the 10’s of 1000’s of riders coming in from around the world. We are very proud to be part of those festivities. In past years we have supported numerous organizations and events. This year our efforts are focused on the Biker Belles event on Tuesday August 5th.
As it states at www.bikerbelles.com  “The Biker Belles was created by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip for two complementary purposes.  The first is to raise awareness of the passion, diversity and spirit of women in motorcycling, celebrating the woman’s role in shaping the culture, art and history of motorcycling.  The second is to use this event to raise funds for worthy local charities that would be of particular interest to these very women.”

In the first place, we love women, so that is a good thing.
Secondly, if you go to the website you will see two very worthy causes the funds go to.
First is the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. This is an organization I have worked for previously and continue to support today. It is a great group preserving history, and one that has a great future.
The second charity is truly worthwhile and very important to the community. That is Helping with Horsepower.

Helping with Horsepower™ is a program to help young women and girls who are at risk or are victims of abuse. As the Father of three wonderful daughters, I can see no better way to spend my time and resources but to help women and young girls in need.
I am sending this message to let everyone know of the generosity of these great industry professionals as they contribute to this wonderful event. An event that I will personally be present at to answer any questions about these Biker Belles participating industry leaders:

Butty Buddy Logo

The above vendors were asked to participate. Without hesitation, they jumped at the chance to help.
If you want a great day next Tuesday at the rally, check out the Biker Belles event and hopefully I will see you at the Buffalo Chip for the festivities.
Thanks for you time

SRS_BIKE&GTR-6x5.5-WIN+LOGOS

“It’s not every day you get to give away a custom bike and a guitar,” says Brian Kirkendall, Marketing Director for Victory Motorcycles. “To see the look on the lucky person’s face when they win — it’s one of the coolest things ever.”

The winner of the Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes will take home his or her very own 2014 Victory Cross Country® 8-Ball customized by renowned builder, Cory Ness of Arlen Ness Enterprises. The bike is chock full of distinctive custom Ness parts and unique features.

“This year’s bike is loaded up with the best of the best from Arlen Ness,” exclaims builder, Cory Ness. “We started at the front with our new Beveled 23” billet wheel, 6 degree raked trees and a 23” Ness front fender. We added some Ness ape hanger handlebars and Fusion grips to give the bike some additional attitude. We also stretched the tank to accept the custom leather seat from Le Pera. The rest of the bike is covered in Ness Beveled accessories. I’m confident this bike is going to make someone very, very happy.”

The Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes bike and guitar both feature matching custom paint jobs courtesy of award-winning painter, Kirk Taylor of Custom Design Studios. Taylor’s affinity for retro styling made him the ideal candidate to perfect both the bike and guitar’s striking exterior. He was able to realize his imaginative vision for the two using eye-catching paints from PPG.

“When the Buffalo Chip approached me about the Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes bike, they were thinking something traditional,” says Taylor. “I immediately thought of ‘California Kid,’ a traditional iconic hot rod from the ’70s. It was a ’34 Ford that was black with orange flames and white pin stripes. I didn’t think you could get much more traditional than that. So I contacted my friends at PPG, who happened to have a gorgeous orange color in their Vibrance line. The guitar and bike will be both a basic black with a pearlized orange flame and a white stripe, and the custom guitar is named the ‘California Kid.’”

“Cory Ness and Kirk Taylor have truly outdone themselves with this year’s sweepstakes bike,” says Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “Bike Week visitors will absolutely be blown away when they lay eyes on this beautiful piece of machinery and its matching guitar. The Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes is one of the ways we say thank you to folks who call the Buffalo Chip home during the Sturgis Rally. With great partners like Ness Enterprises, Victory, Epiphone, Custom Design Studios and PPG, the Chip can continue to offer world-class sweepstakes prizes alongside the greatest concerts of the Rally!”

Those interested in registering for the Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes following Daytona Bike Week may do so on the Buffalo Chip website or by visiting participating rider-friendly businesses. The Sturgis Buffalo Chip will randomly select one fan to receive the Victory motorcycle and Epiphone guitar on the main stage during its 33rd annual Motorcycle and Music Festival on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014. Café Racer TV and Destination America Feature Sturgis Buffalo Chip® in Shows Airing This Week

Sturgis, SD (December 3, 2013) – Footage shot at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s 32nd annual Motorcycle and Music Festival will air during two separate television programs this week. Destination America premieres “Badass Biker Rallies” on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 10/9C. Then on Wednesday, Dec. 4, footage from the Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycles As Art exhibition will air on Café Racer TV. The programs are two of nearly a dozen TV shows filmed during the campground’s annual Sturgis Rally festival in 2013.

BUFFALO-CHIP-TON-UP-DISPLAY

The Café Racer TV series gives viewers a look into the culture and craft of the café racer. In the episode filmed at the Buffalo Chip, the program explores the premier Sturgis Rally art exhibition, which was this year themed “Ton Up! – Speed, Style and Café Racer Culture.” The hour-long program airs Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 10 p.m. ET and again Thursday, Dec. 5 at 1 a.m. ET on Velocity.

The episode filmed at the Buffalo Chip focuses on the photography of Motorcycles As Art curator, Michael Lichter. Viewers will discover what it was that made him base the Buffalo Chip’s 2013 exhibit on café racers and how the bikes fit in with a Sturgis Rally crowd. In addition, the show interviews celebrities like Willie G. Davidson and Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister—asking them to weigh in on both the work of Michael Lichter and the history behind the café racer.

BUFFALO-CHIP-CAFE-RACER-TV-LICHTER

“We are always so thrilled to be able to share Michael Lichter’s photography with our festival guests,” says Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “So to have the ability to share his vision and talent with the rest of the world is an amazing honor.”

Several additional Buffalo Chip events and attractions were captured for the premiere of “Badass Biker Rallies.” The Destination America film crew chose to camp at the Buffalo Chip for the duration of the Rally so they could get in on the Authentic Sturgis Experience. The crew spent time with venue owner, Rod Woodruff, and filmed such activities as midget bowling and machine gun shooting at the gun range.

The Buffalo Chip has appeared in numerous television episodes since the end of its 2013 Motorcycle and Music Festival. In August, Country Music Television (CMT) aired three hour-long specials filmed exclusively at the Sturgis campground as part of its CMT Bike Week series. Episodes of Velocity’s “All Girls Garage,” History’s “Top Gear” and CMT’s “Orange County Choppers” later featured the Buffalo Chip this Fall. Many of these programs are still in rotation, so check your local listings for re-air dates.

Travel Channel’s “Trip Flip” and “Food Paradise” will be the next television programs to feature the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. More details will be announced as air dates approach. For more information on television programs filmed at the Buffalo Chip or on the events they featured, visit www.BuffaloChip.com.

TORC: THE OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP RACES INTO STURGIS

Multi-year agreement brings TORC Racing to The Legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip

  TORC Image

(Dana Point, CA) – For over 3 decades, The Sturgis Buffalo Chip has served as host to the World’s largest motorcycle gathering – the Sturgis Rally. Year after year at the beginning of August, over 500,000 motorcycle enthusiasts come to the small town in South Dakota for 10 full days of riding and attending world-class events at “The Chip” including a music festival headlined by some of the biggest names in music.

TORC Image2

Continuing its commitment to provide premium entertainment, The Sturgis Buffalo Chip has added a brand new event to its calendar starting in 2014.

Today, TORC: The Off-Road Championship and ‘The Chip’ have entered a multi-year agreement to bring the high-energy action of TORC Racing to the grounds in Sturgis. To prepare for this, a new race track for the Series will be built within The Buffalo Chip Powersports Complex for the purpose of showcasing the true capabilities of 900 horsepower race trucks, known to jump over 200 feet in the air, racing side-by-side at speeds of over 100mph.
