Buffalo Chip $100,000 Pledge Kickstarts Special Olympics Campaign

Spearfish, SD (January 16, 2016) – The Sturgis Buffalo Chip® and participants in its signature Legends Ride are teaming up in a special effort to help Special Olympics in the Black Hills area create a permanent athlete training facility. Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff has pledged $100,000 to a fundraising campaign effort by Black Hills Works and Special Olympics to renovate an existing facility in order to meet the growing needs of the organization. The 127 Special Olympians who are members of the “Rapid City Flame” team have been training in various borrowed locations over the past few years but are now in need of a facility that will offer the team members a sense of permanence and accomplishment. For the past three years, Legends Ride contributions have been used to purchase a van to transport participants to practices and events; now the need for a facility is a priority.

“I couldn’t think of an organization more deserving of our help than Special Olympics,” said Rod Woodruff, Buffalo Chip President. “When the kids come to events, and we see how happy and proud they are to have the van we purchased, it is abundantly evident we are making a difference in their lives and in the Black Hills community. Now they need a place to train, a place where they can feel at home, and we are ready to step up and help them with that too.”

Black Hills Works, an organization which provides support for Black Hills adults with disabilities, offered to share their gym with the youth, but the building is in need of major updating. The funds pledged by the Buffalo Chip’s Legends Ride will allow BHW clients to use the renovated gym on a daily basis while giving priority scheduling to the Special Olympics teams for training.

“This is a great partnership,” said Special Olympics South Dakota Board Member, Jack Lynass. “We explored the idea of building our own gym, but even if we could have paid for construction, the maintenance and utilities were out of range for our organization. The Black Hills Works gym is in need of renovation, and we need a permanent location where the kids can feel at home. With the help of the Buffalo Chip and Legends Riders, we have a very good start on the fundraising needed to make this facility work for both organizations.”

“Once again we owe a great debt of gratitude to Rod and Carol Woodruff for their extraordinary generosity in supporting our friends and neighbors with special needs,” said Special Olympics South Dakota Chairman of the Board, Dr. Mark Harlow. “Having a dedicated facility to support activities for both sports and social events is in line with Project Unify, a national Special Olympics education and sports based program, and South Dakota is leading the way by making these opportunities available.”

Black Hills Works, located on the west side of Rapid City, currently assists about 580 disabled adults from numerous Black Hills communities and supports the 280 athlete members of the “Storm” adult Special Olympics team.

“The gym is an integral part of our clients’ lives. This partnership and the renovations will greatly benefit both organizations,” said Brad Saathoff, Black Hills Works CEO. “It’s busy all of the time, either with individuals shooting hoops or working out or with scheduled team activities. It’s evident it has gotten a lot of use. It definitely needs a new floor, and without a breezeway, the new floor would be ruined in no time. We also would really like to upgrade the locker rooms and expand the cramped weight and cardio room. There are many times when all of the machines are busy, and there are several people crammed in waiting for their turn.”

One hundred percent of Legends Riders contributions benefit charity. The 2016 Legends Ride will take place on Monday, Aug. 8.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE TO SPONSOR INAUGURAL “VETERANS CHARITY RIDE TO STURGIS”

America’s first motorcycle company makes epic ride to 75th Rally possible for disabled U.S. military veterans

sidecar-

MEDINA, Minn. June 19, 2015 Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, today announced its sponsorship of the “Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis.”  The ride, intended to raise support for severely wounded and injured veterans, will offer a group of former military service members the opportunity to ride to Sturgis, SD just in time for the rally’s 75th anniversary.

Indian Motorcycle recently announced a partnership with the USO, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing programs and live entertainment to the U.S. troops and their families worldwide, and today is expanding its commitment to those who served. In addition to sponsoring the ride, Indian Motorcycle is providing the service members with bikes to ride to Sturgis. Several of the Indian models have been outfitted with sidecars specially built and provided by Champion Sidecars to accommodate the riders who are unable to operate a motorcycle themselves due to multiple traumatic amputations.

“In the same way we are inspired by the courageous and selfless commitment these men and women made defending our country, we are honored to help each of them achieve their dream of riding to Sturgis on an Indian Motorcycle,” said Scott Meek, marketing director for Indian Motorcycle.

More than a dozen veterans, from various military branches and of varying ages, will start their weeklong journey to Sturgis from Los Angeles.  The trip will be filled with exciting locations and routes on their epic journey to the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis.

The group will spend six days riding spectacular scenic backroads and exploring some of America’s greatest national treasures including Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Capital Reef National Park, The Arches and Moab, Utah. From Utah the group will continue their journey through the Colorado National Monument, Hahn’s Peak Colorado and Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming, arriving in Sturgis on Sunday, August 2.

At the rally, they will enjoy the ultimate Sturgis experience. America’s First Motorcycle Company takes special pride in its long-standing relationship with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which was started by Indian Motorcycle dealer “Pappy” Hoel in 1938. The riders will be treated to several activities sponsored by Indian and its partners, including participation in the Buffalo Chip’s “Freedom Ride” on Thursday, August 6 along with 600 fellow veterans.

Indian Motorcycle has partnered with Emmy award-winning Director Robert Manciero and his production company, Full Vision Productions, to create this adventure and film the entire journey. “We are honored to be putting on this event and campaign in support of Indian Motorcycle and the service members who have given so much for our country. We have created a fantastic, weeklong ride with activities and excursions planned along the route in addition to chef-prepared special meals and visits with other veterans and organizations,” said Manciero.

“Attending the Sturgis Bike Rally has been on my bucket list for many years, but riding to the 75th anniversary with my fellow veterans on an motorcycle is a dream come true,” said Los Angeles-based Jorge Hernandez, a veteran Marine with 12 years of service, two Purple Hearts and four deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Full Vision Productions has created a unique, interactive media platform to chronicle the epic ride. It will enable fellow veterans, motorcycle enthusiasts and other supporters to follow the riders and campaign in real-time, interacting with them via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and watching daily videos of their journey. Riders who are on their way to Sturgis for the rally will find the itinerary for each day posted on the site should they wish to join the ride and support the riders on their once-in-a-lifetime journey. For more details about the campaign, videos and specifics of the route and excursions visit the Veterans Charity Ride official website at www.veteranscharityride.org.

Black Hills Students Return Victorious From Famed Donnie Smith Bike Show

2015 Buffalo Chip Challenge students w bikes

Sturgis, SD (March 30, 2015) – High school students from across the Northern Black Hills are returning home today from the prestigious Donnie Smith Bike Show in St. Paul, Minn. with two new trophies to add to their growing collection. The students participated in the Buffalo Chip Challenge™ program, headquartered at Sturgis Brown High School, where they helped to build two world-class custom motorcycles under the instruction of some of the industry’s most celebrated customizers.

The student-built custom 2014 Indian Chieftain received FIRST PLACE IN THE FULL CUSTOM/OTHER BAGGER CLASS and the 2014 Harley- Davidson Road King took SECOND PLACE IN THE HARLEY ROAD KING W/26″ WHEEL (FULL CUSTOM) CATEGORY. The students competed against professional custom bike builders from around the country, which makes winning these awards a remarkable achievement.

“The kids worked very hard for these awards and the scholarships we are offering with this program,” says Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “Their dedication has paid off. We are very proud to be a part of their success.”

The 2015 Buffalo Chip Challenge program, themed “When 2 Legends Collide,” pitted superstar bike builders and tutors John Shope of Dirty Bird Concepts and Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation in a head-to-head competition. Shope’s team worked to customize the Indian, and Yaffe’s team transformed the Harley. While Team Shope came out as the winner at the Donnie Smith Show, all of the students came away victorious, learning valuable lessons from the best in the business. The two custom motorcycles will go head to head once more when the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® auctions both off Monday, Aug. 3, 2015 in support of its signature Legends Ride®.

The Buffalo Chip Challenge is a collaboration between the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, Sturgis Brown High School, Terry Components, Dakota V-Twin and a large group of industry-leading sponsors. This is the fifth consecutive year the Sturgis Buffalo Chip has lead the regional program focused on American innovation and craftsmanship. World-renowned customization leaders Nick Trask, Dave Perewitz, Keith Terry, Randy Cramer, Nick Cramer and Chris Malo as well as Sturgis Brown High School instructors Chad Hedderman and Bill Johnson were all instrumental in instructing students.

Many of the motorcycle industry’s top companies continue to supply world-class parts and services for the Buffalo Chip’s build program each year, recognizing its significance as part of the growth and success in American custom bike building. Special thanks to American Iron Magazine, AirFX, Baggster, Arlen Ness Enterprises, Hot Leathers, C.P. Sturgis, SD (January 6, 2015) – The name Evel Knievel is synonymous with daredevil. He was the undisputed king of stunt showmanship–the man who made motorcycles fly. He enthralled audiences with his nonchalance as he faced death-defying exploits that left him with a record-breaking number of fractured or crushed bones, a permanent limp and the adoration of millions. This August, the spirit of Knievel® will come to life at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip in a spectacular thrill show unlike any organized before. The Evel Knievel Thrill Show will consist of the largest collection of Evel Knievel curiosities ever assembled, including the Skycycle, x-rays of his numerous broken bones, the now famous “Sports Illustrated” leathers and cape, and the Mack truck show-rig he named “Big Red.” The Thrill Show will also include a dangerous attempt at an unsuccessful Evel Knievel world-record jump on the same bike that failed Evel and ultimately lead to his defeat. On Aug. 6, 2015, daredevil Doug Danger will attempt a 22-car jump on Evel Knievel’s vintage 1972 Harley-Davidson XR-750 in the middle of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip amphitheater.

A young Evel Knievel attempts to jump over a series of cars

Knievel attempted a jump over a line of 22 cars on September 1, 1972 in Monroe, Washington. His crew warned that the bike would not attain the speed needed to clear the distance, but because Knievel insisted on doing the jump, they built a safety ramp over the last three cars. Knievel bounce-landed on the safety ramp and left defeated. More than 40 years later, Doug Danger is set to attempt the same jump on Knievel’s own bike and clear the 22nd car. Knievel’s bike has not been altered with the exception of moving a foot peg to accommodate Danger’s height. Another daredevil attempted this jump in 2001, and it ended in a horrific crash.

“This is an incredibly difficult and terrifying jump,” said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff. “We are doing all we can to make sure Doug Danger lands safely, but that bike was not built for a jump like this. We really hope he can make it.”

“This is the one jump Evel couldn’t make; he failed. I’m determined to succeed where he fell short,” Danger said. “I know it’s dangerous, but death has had me by the throat twice in my life, and I spit in its face. When God’s ready, he’ll take me.”

The Evel Knievel Thrill Show curiosities will be located in the CrossRoads area at the Buffalo Chip July 31 – Aug. 8, entrance fee, paid in advance, is only $10. Doug Danger will attempt the record-breaking jump on Knievel’s XR-750 in the Buffalo Chip amphitheater on Thursday, Aug. 6. Campground day passes for Thursday will be available beginning Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 5pm at BuffaloChip.com or by calling the Buffalo Chip box office at 605-347-9000.

Sturgis Drag Racing Recap – Western Motorcycle Drag Racing Association

Sturgis Dragway was the perfect backdrop for the grass roots motorcycle drag racing of the 3rd Annual AMSOIL Sturgis Nationals, held August 5 and 6 during the 74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.  Not only did racers have to battle the track this year, but Mother Nature and a lightning-fried time slip printer as well… never a dull moment!

With qualifying completely rained out on Tuesday, the men and women racers of the WMDRA pulled together and got the complete show in on Wednesday in less than 12 hours; no small feat considering the multitude of activities scheduled for the day.

A highlight for racers and fans alike was the introduction and honoring of Grand Marshals Bonnie Truett, Marion Owens and Pete Hill.  With bikes going down the track behind them, these legends of the sport took it all in stride as they greeted the crowd and were presented leather jackets courtesy of Harley-Davidson by iconic motorcycle racer and admirer Jay Allen.

Amongst and between all the action at the track, Mark Dotson was able to complete the WMDRA’s Drag Racing School and private Drag Racing 101 clinic for members of the media, with special thanks to Bell Helmets, the Sturgis Nationals Official Helmet, for providing the full face head gear for students. Regrettably, due to the time crunch and inclement weather, these brave souls will have to wait until next year to make their first pass down Sturgis Dragway.

As the afternoon waned and gray skies threatened, spectators and racers alike were treated to the heartfelt Invocation of racer Rich Vreeland and the beautiful sound of the USAF Academy Band Wild Blue Country’s rendition of our national anthem.  According to Jeffrey S. Valentine TSgt USAF USAFA USAFA/BA, “It was a blast, everyone we met was wonderful. Thanks again WMDRA for everything you did to make us feel so welcome.”

Competition was fierce amongst the three pro classes and six sportsman classes, with 73 racers vying for the title of Sturgis Champion (see results below).

In addition to the title of Sturgis Champion, Official Tire of the Sturgis Nationals Mickey Thompson also awarded a rear drive tire of choice to Freddie Robbins in Top Fuel, Billy Hendron in Pro Drag, and Quick Draw Challenge Winner Twang of Motorcycle Specialties in Davenport, Iowa.

Associate Sponsor Motor Whiskey awarded custom trophies for Best Finish by a Lady Competitor Kersten Heling, Closest Hole Shot Loss Jeff Champagne and Closest to Dial-In Twang of Motorcycle Specialties. The one-of-a-kind trophies were designed by sculptor Ronnie Hansen of MonsterhedZ in Roosevelt, Utah.

Our sincerest gratitude goes out to our sponsors AMSOIL, S&S Cycle, Mickey Thompson, Bell Helmets, Brocks Performance, Gear Head Publishing, Motor Whiskey, Cardo, the South Dakota Pork Producers Council, and Pro Riders Marketing; as well as Masters Entertainment Group and the Inside Drag Racing crew; to the USAF Academy Band Wild Blue Country for opening ceremony services and Rich Vreeland for our invocation; and to all the racers and fans who continue to support the sport.
