Sturgis, SD (March 30, 2015) – High school students from across the Northern Black Hills are returning home today from the prestigious Donnie Smith Bike Show in St. Paul, Minn. with two new trophies to add to their growing collection. The students participated in the Buffalo Chip Challenge™ program, headquartered at Sturgis Brown High School, where they helped to build two world-class custom motorcycles under the instruction of some of the industry’s most celebrated customizers.

The student-built custom 2014 Indian Chieftain received FIRST PLACE IN THE FULL CUSTOM/OTHER BAGGER CLASS and the 2014 Harley- Davidson Road King took SECOND PLACE IN THE HARLEY ROAD KING W/26″ WHEEL (FULL CUSTOM) CATEGORY. The students competed against professional custom bike builders from around the country, which makes winning these awards a remarkable achievement.

“The kids worked very hard for these awards and the scholarships we are offering with this program,” says Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “Their dedication has paid off. We are very proud to be a part of their success.”

The 2015 Buffalo Chip Challenge program, themed “When 2 Legends Collide,” pitted superstar bike builders and tutors John Shope of Dirty Bird Concepts and Paul Yaffe of Bagger Nation in a head-to-head competition. Shope’s team worked to customize the Indian, and Yaffe’s team transformed the Harley. While Team Shope came out as the winner at the Donnie Smith Show, all of the students came away victorious, learning valuable lessons from the best in the business. The two custom motorcycles will go head to head once more when the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® auctions both off Monday, Aug. 3, 2015 in support of its signature Legends Ride®.

The Buffalo Chip Challenge is a collaboration between the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, Sturgis Brown High School, Terry Components, Dakota V-Twin and a large group of industry-leading sponsors. This is the fifth consecutive year the Sturgis Buffalo Chip has lead the regional program focused on American innovation and craftsmanship. World-renowned customization leaders Nick Trask, Dave Perewitz, Keith Terry, Randy Cramer, Nick Cramer and Chris Malo as well as Sturgis Brown High School instructors Chad Hedderman and Bill Johnson were all instrumental in instructing students.

Many of the motorcycle industry’s top companies continue to supply world-class parts and services for the Buffalo Chip’s build program each year, recognizing its significance as part of the growth and success in American custom bike building. Well folks, it’s early Sunday morning, the night after the 11th Annual Indian Larry Grease Monkey Block Party, and once again, Stellar weather, swarms of great & unusual people, incredible custom motorcycles, atmosphere, and on and on and on… Way too much to say in a simple post. What I will attempt to do here is walk you through my day, even if just with a handful of images, and after editing, I will post the remaining hundreds of images & video in our galleries. ALSO, PLEASE TAKE NOTE: WE “HOUSE OF CHOPPERS MAGAZINE / BIKERPICS.ORG will be donating .50 cents of All subscribers to our $1.99 galleries directly to the AIDAN JACK SEEGER FOUNDATION, which is the purpose for all of this madness. So here we go, the day through my eyes.

As you all may know, or not, I am not only a long term Photographer in the Motorcycle Industry shooting for my site BIKERPICS.ORG and our internal magazine, HOUSE OF CHOPPERS MAGAZINE, I am also a partner in the company of Johnny Mac’s Chopper House, just outside of Philadelphia, PA. On the maiden voyage of our new RV and trailer, where do we decide to go first? The extremely tight streets of Brooklyn, NY to the 11th Annual Indian Larry Grease Monkey Block Party.

ILGMBP 8067 THE 2014 INDIAN LARRY BLOCK PARTYAs setup started at 400 Union Ave, the location of the Indian Larry shop, with heave assistance of the fine NYC Police Department (great guys & ladies by the way), the vendors poured in, many from far away states.  ILGMBP 8085 THE 2014 INDIAN LARRY BLOCK PARTY

Below, this was an interesting item to point out, an artist came in and was painting bikes as he saw them, right in front of all to watch, I was a little unsure of what the result would be but in the end, the final product was stunning.ILGMBP 8167 THE 2014 INDIAN LARRY BLOCK PARTY

The next series of images will get into the bikes of the show, the look, the feel of the afternoon. Enjoy!

World’s Biggest BMW Motorrad Festival Takes Place July 4-6
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 30, 2014…Six-time motorcycle land speed record holder and one of the world’s fastest BMW racers, Valerie Thompson, will make a guest appearance at the 14th BMW Motorrad Days celebration July 4-6 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.  The biggest BMW party of the year is expected to draw over 40,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world.
Thompson will join fellow BMW racing legends in the Classic Tent, which will highlight “90 Years of Championships and Titles,” beginning with the BMW R 37 at the first German Championship in 1924 through the first AMA Superbike victory on the BMW R 90 to the recent successes achieved on the BMW S 1000 RR.  In June, Thompson set her 6th land speed racing record at the Ohio Mile with a blistering speed of more than 208 mph on her BMW S 1000 RR, shattering the previous record and becoming the newest female member of the prestigious ECTA 200 MPH Club.
“I’m thrilled to be invited back to BMW Motorrad Days,” says Thompson, who is making her second guest appearance as a visiting American VIP racer.  “It is an honor to be included among such accomplished riders. Last year, I had a fantastic time meeting terrific people, riding a GS up and down some steep terrain, eating lots of great food and joining the festivities at night.”
When Thompson returns to the U.S., her sights will be set on shattering a new record at the prestigious Bonneville Speed Trials in August and joining the Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA’s) “Bonneville 200 MPH Club.”  After that, she’ll attempt additional land speed records at El Mirage and the Texas Mile.
“My goal is to get into every single one of the 200 MPH Clubs with my BMW S 1000 RR,” remarks Thompson.  “Since purchasing the bike in January 2012, it has taken my career to a new level. I feel one with this bike, like I’m practically the paint. We are definitely a match made in high-performance heaven!”
When asked whether she considers hanging up her leathers anytime soon, the American Queen of Speed replies, “I’ve never given much thought to hanging up my helmet. With a little help from BMW, I plan to keep going faster as long as I can. There are always new records to break, even if they are mine.”
BMW Motorrad Days is open to all motorcycle enthusiasts free of charge.  The three-day extravaganza features more than 80 exhibitors, test rides on all the latest BMW Motorrad models, guided enduro tours, Irish stunt rider and all-round entertainer Mattie Griffin, world-record precision rider Russ Swift, presentations by Michael Martin and other GS world travelers, the world’s oldest traveling wooden Motodrom show, live music and more.

The Fowlers Report – Brew Bikes Holds Record

The Fowlers Report
Brew Bikes Holds Record
Recently Fowlers Distribution of Waterbury, Ct. announce their support for Steve “Brewdude” Garn of Brew Bikes in Boone, N.C. In order to keep you up to “speed” on the progress of Steve’s efforts as he goes after speed records and enters bike shows through out the year, we have launched the Fowlers Report. We will send this out monthly as Steve reports back to us on the results of his efforts. As the monthly newsletter evolves, we will include many other items of interest in the motorcycle industry.
Below is the first report directly from “Brewdude” himself on this past weekends Ohio Mile in Wilmington, Ohio
The week ahead for the May event at the ECTA Ohio Mile started out on the dyno with the 1974 Yamaha RD350. Doing some high speed runs, checking temps, and the Lectron carb settings. The Lectron carbs made it easy to get the jetting spot on and had an increase of 13% Hp that day. The expansion chambers really flatten the power on top end but not sure how much the effect would be until the Ohio mile.Started out early Friday morning for the East Coast Timing Association event in Wilmington, Ohio. We knew ahead of time there would be some winds but it was more than anticipated. The bike went through inspection and then we headed off for some rest at the hotel.

Saturday we arrived at the track at 6am and unloaded the bike and got it in line. We were the 15th vehicle in line. It was a nervous type of day. New bike with new design of a featherbed frame built with Reynolds 853 tubing. An engine that was just built and 25 mph headwinds swirling as some crosswinds in areas of the mile. The bike only weighs 243lbs wet weight and this is the first time to have the bike up to full speed.  The new Weiss leathers supplied by Fowlers Distributing fit perfectly to give the protection necessary as dictated by the ECTA.

In addition the Speed & Strength helmet from Tucker Rocky was a perfect compliment to the riding gear needed to compete.

The first run was full of unexpected situations. About the ½ mile mark a gust hit so hard the bike felt like something broke and I sat up and looked at everything and put my head back down and proceeded. About 100 yard from the lights another gust hit hard and slowed the bike. The run was not at all what I expected. Speed was down but the bike actually felt stable with the winds. The winds made it unsafe to run the event so they shut it down for the day.

Photo compliments of

Sunday we were  8th in the line. Many spectators showed up and everyone was anxious to get the event started! Winds were 20 mph with some gusts and was mainly a headwind. The bike felt very stable in these conditions but the gearing was a bit too high and could not get into 6th gear due to the flat top end from the expansion chambers.

At the end of the day the bike is the current record holder with a speed of 110.9mph. There is so much more potential in this machine and we hope to unleash that power in future events. The bike was stable, shifted excellent and made some good runs. But watch out! We located some expansion chambers that will give at least 10 more HP! Now to get to work in the shop to pay for them.

Many THANKS to our sponsors!  Lectron, Fowlers Distribution, Wiseco, Avon Tyre, Bikers Choice, Pro Riders Marketing, Tucker Rocky, Spectro Oil, A All Animal Control,

LC Fabrication, Mount Airy Cyclery, and Loaded Gun Customs!

Online signup live for AMA Vintage Motocross National Championship Series, presented by Cernic’s Racing

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Racers can pre-register now for all rounds of the AMA Vintage Motocross National Championship Series, presented by Cernic’s Racing. The seven-round series includes rounds in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Indiana. It kicks off on May 18.Links to pre-register for each round are available“It’s exciting to watch the vintage motocross series grow and improve,” said AMA Motocross Operational Coordinator Alex Hunter. “Not only is online registration up and running, but we have Cernic’s Racing on board as a series sponsor, and several new venues are on the 2014 calendar.”

Jeff Cernic, owner of Cernic’s Racing in Johnstown, Pa., is not only sponsoring the series, but he’s also a vintage racing enthusiast, with more than 100 vintage motorcycles of his own.

“It makes sense for Cernic’s Racing to be involved with the AMA Vintage Motocross National Championship Series with our long history of involvement in motocross,” Cernic said. “Vintage racing provides racers a unique atmosphere to compete on the motorcycles they grew up racing in the ’60s and ’70s, do some bench racing and have a good time. The entire racing staff at Cernic’s is excited to be the title sponsor of the series.”

New rounds for 2014 include Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut, Ill.; Russell Creek MX in Greensburg, Ky.; and Mammoth East in Paoli Peaks, Ind. Racers also will have additional classes to choose from, particularly expanded non-current classes.

“We learned a lot in our first year running the series, and as a result 2014 also features a advancement system that will identify our A-class riders,” Hunter added. “We’re also going to a one-day format this year. Promoters and racers wanted a tighter program, and this makes sense for all involved.”

“One thing that hasn’t changed is how easy it is to break into vintage racing,” Hunter said. “The speeds are a bit slower, the bikes are a lot cheaper, and the attitude is laid back and easy going. If you ever wanted to experience motorcycle racing, vintage competition is a great way to do it.”
